The Alpine combined, using point scores for a downhill and slalom race, returned to the Olympic Program for the first time since the 1948 Winter Olympics. The favorite was Pirmin Zurbriggen, who had already won a gold in the downhill, silver in the giant slalom, and was leading the 1987-88 World Cup combined event. He led the field in the downhill, and after the first run of the slalom, was far out in front. But as he neared the end of the second run, he hooked a tip on a gate and fell, not able to finish. The left it open for Hubert Strolz (AUT) to win the gold medal, which he did with his consistency – he was fifth in the downhill section, ninth on the first slalom run, and fourth on the second slalom run.
