Dmitry Ukolov started his hockey career in 1948 with Spartak Moskva, but in 1949 he switched to CSKA Moskva and played with them until at the end of his career in 1961. Besides his Olympic gold medal, Ukolov won World Championship golds in 1954 and 1956, and silvers in 1955, 1958, and 1959, also winning European Championships in 1955-56 and 1958-59 and he played on seven Soviet Champion teams (1950, 1955-56, 1958-61). He also won Soviet Cups in 1954-56.
