Czech-born ice hockey player Herbert Ulrich represented Austria at the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics, finishing seventh. He started his career at HC Sparta Praha (Prague) from 1938-43 and then moved to HC Slovan Bratislava (1943-45). In 1948 he moved to Wiener (Vienna) Eislauf-Verein. Later he played with HC Neuchâtel Young Sprinters (1949) in Switzerland and Berliner SC (1949-50) and Preußen Krefeld (1950-51) in Germany. Ulrich helped Krefeld win the German national title in 1951. From 1951-60 Ulrich then played with VfL Bad Nauheim in Germany.
As he had already represented Czechoslavakia and Austria internationally, Ulrich was not allowed to play for Germany at the 1953 European and World Championships. He then turned to coaching in Switzerland with HC Ambri-Piotta, HC Lugano, HC Davos and Zürcher SC. In Germany Ulrich coached EV Landshut, Preußen Krefeld, Eintracht Frankfurt and EC Köln (Cologne).
