Donald Unger

Donald Unger was a top Swiss athlete who excelled in ice hockey, tennis, and bobsledding. In addition to playing ice hockey at the 1924 Chamonix Winter Olympics, Unger played at the European Championships three times, in 1910, 1922, and 1924, winning bronzes in the latter two years. Unger was a rover in hockey initially but later switched to wing.

Unger returned to the Olympics in 1936 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen when he was an alternate on the Swiss 4-man bobsled team. In hockey he started out as a rover but later played on the wing. His hockey career lasted from 1909-24, starting out with Leysin HC, but later playing for Bellerive HC, Les Avants HC, Caux HC, and he then played his final six years with St. Moritz HC.

Unger had a Scottish mother and was educated in Switzerland and England. He was an officer in the Swiss Army but moved to the United States in 1924, where he worked as a French and German teacher, first at Pomfret School in Connecticut and then at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire.
