Sylvester Wackerle, Sr. finished sixth with the West German four-man bob team Germany 1 at the 1956 Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics. His team-mates were Michael Pössinger, Lorenz Nieberl and Hans Rösch. With the four-man bob he won two medals at the World Championships (silver in 1954 and bronze in 1953). Sylvester Sr. was the West German two-man bob champion in 1949, and in 1950 and 1956 won the four-man titles. One of his sons Anton also became a bobsledder, and another son, Sylvester Jr. became a hockey professional. Both participated in the 1964 Innsbruck Winter Games. The Wackerle family later owned the Bräustüberl, a tavern in Garmisch.
