Peter Wespi, or “PeWe,” started his hockey career with the small club EHC Effretikon, but as a junior joined the top club Zürcher SC in 1960. In his first season with the club, his team took the Swiss national title as well as the national cup. He stayed with the club until the end of his active career after the 1973/74 season and played a total of 299 championship games. He was an excellent skater with good technical skills. Initially Wespi played as a forward but due to an eye injury became a defensive player. In fact he was considered Switzerland’s first modern defensive forward. For many years Wespi was also a member of the Swiss national team, earning 34 caps, and playing at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games, and the 1963 World B Championships. After his active career he trained several teams in the Swiss national league in addition to teaching physical education in his home town of Effretikon. He later adopted his wife’s name as his second surname. Wespi died of cancer at the age of 72.
