Bernd Guse, a flatwater canoeist from Berlin, was in the K4-1,000 meters squad eliminated in the semi-finals at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Four years later in München, he failed to qualify for the semi-finals in the K1-1,000 meters. At the European Championships, he won a silver medal with the 4 x 500 meters relay in 1967.
From 1967-70 Guse won four consecutive West German titles in the K1-1,000. Together with Erich Kemnitz, he also won the K2-1,000 meters title in 1966 and 1967, and also at 10,000 metres in 1967 and 1968. In 1969 Guse captured the K2-1,000 and 10,000 meters titles with Eberhard Fischer. He retained the 1,000 metres title in 1970, and in 1971 was champion over 10,000 meters again. He also helped Kanuklub Charlottenburg to win the K4-1,000 titles in 1967 and 1969, and the 4 x 500 metres relay title 1967.
