German whitewater canoeist Thomas Loose participated in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when canoe slalom became a permanent fixture in the Olympic program after its first appearance in 1972. He partnered with Frank Hemmer in the Canadian doubles and finished 13th. Both had their greatest moment in winning the gold medal at the 1989 World Championships. Loose also won three team bronze medals, in 1987, 1989, and 1991.
Loose and Hemmer also won national titles in 1983, 1985, and 1987-91. Loose later led the canoe event agency Lippe-Kanu UG.
