In Alpine Rahlves was primarily a speed skier who raced on the World Cup circuit from 1995-2006, winning 12 World Cup races, 9 in downhill and 3 in Super-G. He had 28 podiums, with 20 in downhill and 7 in Super-G. Rahlves was second in the seasonal World Cup standings in downhill in 2002/03 and 2003/04 and in Super-G in 2003/04. He also placed third in both disciplines in 2005/06, and was third in Super-G in 2004/05.
Rahlves won seven US titles. His biggest skiing victory was the Hahnenkamm downhill in Kitzbühel in 2003, making him the first American to win the renowned event since Buddy Werner in 1959. He also won the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen, Switzerland in 2006, only the third American to win that event. Rahlves competed at six World Championships in Alpine, winning the 2001 world title in Super-G, with two podiums in 2005, a silver in downhill, and a bronze in giant slalom. In freestyle, Rahlves won the 2008 Winter X Games ski-cross event.
Rahlves became known for his work in ski movies, especially after his Alpine career ended. He was featured in several of Warren Miller’s movies. Among his ski movies were “Impact” (2005), “Enjoy” (2007), “The Thin Line: Examination of the Downhill” (2007), “Children of Winter” (2008), “Down Days” (2008), “In Deep” (2009), “Light the Wick” (2010), “Like There’s No Tomorrow” (2011), and “The Dream Factory” (2012).
