Jay Hakkinen was a biathlete who competed at four Winter Olympics, in 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010. His 10th place finish at the 20 km individual event at Torino in 2006 was the best finish to that date by an American in Olympic competition. Hakkinen won a World Junior Championship in 1997 in the 10 km sprint event. Hakkinen competed at 13 World Championships between 1997 and 2012. He was on the World Cup circuit from 1994-2013, but retired from the sport after the 2013/14 season. He had nine top 10 finishes in World Cup events.
