West German flatwater canoeist Detlef Schmidt, husband of Regina Schmidt, was a member of the K-4 1,000 team at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when the team placed eighth. At the 1986 Flatwater Worlds he earned a bronze medal in the K-4 500.
In 1981 Schmidt was national champion in the K-1 1,000, in 1983 in the K-2 1,000, in 1984 and 1986 in the K-4 1,000, in 1985 in the K-1 10,000, and in 1987 in the K-4 500. Schmidt later graduated as an economist and worked with the Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann at Duisburg in the plant security department.
