Shannon Dunn-Downing was the first American woman to win a snowboarding medal at the Winter Olympics when she took bronze in the halfpipe in 1998. Dunn-Downing had been halfpipe gold medalist at the first Winter X Games in 1997, and repeated that victory in 2001 in the superpipe, as well as winning both Bud Light Grand Prix halfpipes in 1997. She also won Winter X silver medals in halfpipe in 1999 and in slopestyle in 2001. She studied kinesiology at the University of Colorado.
