Sprint canoeist Berni Schulze won a silver medal with the mixed German K4 at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He came back in 1968 to Mexico City in the K2 with Holger Zander, but finished only last in the final of the K2-1000, then representing West Germany.
Schulze first came to prominence winning the West German national K1-500 title in 1959, adding 13 more titles through 1966. In 1959 he also won the European Championship in the kayak relay, and in 1963 he finished fourth both at the Europeans and the Worlds with the relay. By profession, Schulze trained as a plasterer and worked as a commercial clerk.
