German flatwater canoeist Mario von Appen was a member of the gold medal winning kayak fours 1,000 metres team at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, beating the reigning Olympic and World Champions Hungary by 0.64 seconds into second place. Von Appen also won six medals at the World Championships, with two gold, three silvers and one bronze, all with the K4. He also won several German national titles, among them the K1 title in 1984.
Von Appen was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He later became a computer scientist and emigrated to Australia where he became the managing director of an IT company.
