The site of modern day Faiyum in Egypt has been occupied since the epi-paleolithic age. A center of worship for the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek, the Greeks knew the city as Crocodilopolis. Farao Ptolemy II Philadelphus renamed the city in honor of his deceased wife (and sister) Arsinoe II. Both Ptolemy and Arsinoe had won Olympic titles in the equestrian events. As other towns called Arsinoe later were founded, the city was known as Arsinoë in Arcadia in Roman times. Boxer Deidas (or Didas) and Aurelius Germanus have won the city’s known Olympic titles.
