Unlike most ancient cities name Alexandria, this city was not founded or renamed by Alexander the Great. Originally named Sigia, and later Antigonia, it was allegedly renamed in memory of Alexander the Great in 301 BCE. It is not certain that any ancient Olympic champion hailed from this city on the very Western edge of today’s Turkey: Phaidimos and Skamandros are also recorded as being from the better-known Alexandria in Egypt.
