Until 1992, Bosnia and Herzegovina was a republic in the nation of Yugoslavia. In that year, Bosnia and Herzegovina, along with several other Yugoslav republics, declared independence. But unfortunately, the Serbians declared war on the republic. Still, Bosnia and Herzegovina quickly formed a National Olympic Committee on 4 June 1992 and, on the eve of the 1992 Olympics, was granted provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to compete in Barcelona. Full recognition was granted at the IOC session in Monte Carlo, on 24 September 1993. Despite the civil war in the country, Bosnia and Herzegovina valiantly sent competitors to the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer. The official name was Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1997, and only Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1997 onwards.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has also competed at the 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. The 2000 Summer Olympics saw, for the first time, a fully united team of Bosnia and Herzegovina competing. The nation actually consists of two entities - the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, which is the Serb-dominated section in the north and east of the country. In 1992, 1994, 1996, and 1998, only athletes from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina took part, but from 2000 onwards athletes from Republika Srpska also participated.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has been present at the 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022 Olympic Winter Games, competing in five disciplines (Alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, and luge). Similar to the Olympic Games, only athletes from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina took part in 1994 and 1998, but, since 2002, athletes from Republika Srpska have participated for the nation.
The 14th Olympic Winter Games were held in Sarajevo in 1984, which was then part of Yugoslavia, but Sarajevo is presently the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
