Mauritania (MTN)

Mauritania formed a provisional National Olympic Committee in 1962, but in 1977 a more formal body was constituted. After being granted provisional recognition at a meeting of the IOC Executive Board in Nagoya in October 1979, full recognition followed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the IOC Session in Lake Placid on 12 February 1980. Mauritania first competed at the Olympic Games in 1984 and has been present at each of the subsequent Olympics. It has never competed at the Olympic Winter Games.

Through 2022 the country has competed only in two sports: track & field athletics and wrestling. All Mauritanian athletes have been eliminated in the preliminary rounds of competition, therefore never winning an Olympic medal.
