The National Olympic Committee of San Marino was formed on 16 April 1959, and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 25 May of the same year, at the IOC Session in München. San Marino has competed at 15 Olympic Games – in 1960, and in all editions since 1968.
Until Tokyo 2020, San Marino had never won an Olympic medal. But in Japan, three Sammarinese athletes reached the podium. Myles Amine won a bronze medal in the men’s freestyle wrestling light-heavyweight class, and shooters Alessandra Perilli and Gian Marco Berti shared a silver in the mixed team trap event. Two days before, Perilli had also won a bronze in the women’s trap.
San Marino has competed at the Olympic Winter Games since 1976, missing only the editions of 1980 and 1998. Despite those 11 appearances, only 18 Sammarinese have competed at the Olympic Winter Games, 16 men and two women. Most of their participations have been in Alpine skiing, with a two-man bobsleigh team in 1994, and Andrea Sammaritani competing in cross-country skiing in 1984, 1988, and 1992. One other Sammarinese athlete has competed at three Olympic Winter Games, that being Nicola Ercolani in Alpine skiing in 1988, 1992, and 1994.
San Marino is yet to win its first Winter Olympics medal. Their best result was probably the 40th place Alpine skier Francesco Cardelli achieved in the 1984 slalom event.
