Olympic Games | 74 |
---|
In 1958, Egypt merged with Syria to form the United Arab Republic, but the union lasted only until 1961. At the 1960 Olympic Games, Egypt and Syria competed together as the United Arab Republic, with a 74 men team, although all the athletes appear to have been Egyptian. Syrian officials list 1-3 Syrian athletes (the precise numbers are unclear), but none of them seem to have competed. After Syria left the United Arab Republic in 1961, Egypt continued to compete at the Olympic Games under that name in 1964 and 1968, but then reverted to using the name Egypt in 1972, and has competed under that name since.
In its only Olympic participation, UAR athletes won two medals: a silver by Osman El-Sayed in the flyweight Greco-Roman wrestling division, and a bronze by Abdel Moneim El-Gindy in the flyweight boxing category.
