The 1936 hockey tournament had 11 teams competing. The teams were separated into three groups, with four teams in Group A and C, and three in Group B. The winners of Group A and B advanced to the semi-finals, while the winner and runner-up in Group C advanced. India had won the gold medal in 1928 and 1932 and won Group A easily, then crushing France, 10-0, in the semis, and Germany, 8-1, in the final match. India would continue winning in Olympic hockey, winning the gold medal again in 1948, 1952, and 1956, and winning 30 consecutive matches. The 1936 hockey matches were held at the Hockeystadion, which was located adjacent to the Olympiastadion on the Reichssportfeld in Berlin.
