Three traditional Japanese martial arts of kyudo, sumo, and kendo were demonstrated during the 1964 Olympics. Kyudo is Japanese archery, meaning the “way of the bow,” and is based on kyūjutsu (art of archery), which originated with the samurai class of feudal Japan. The sport is of ancient lineage in Japan. A demonstration of kyudo was held in 1964 at the Nippon Budokan, Chiyoda in Tokyo, although we know very little about it.
