Three traditional Japanese martial arts of kyudo, sumo, and kendo were demonstrated during the 1964 Olympics. Kyudo is Japanese archery, meaning the “way of the bow.” The sport is of ancient lineage in Japan. After World War II kyudo became associated with Zen Buddhism, popularized by Eugen Herrigel’s book Zen in the Art of Archery, although most feel that his views of the sport were not fully correct and somewhat colored by his lack of ability to speak Japanese.
