The 1964 weightlifting events were contested at the Shibuya Kokaido, or Shibuya Public Hall, which was built specifically for the 1964 Olympic Games and the weightlifting tournament, which was the only sport held there. The building still exists but was renovated in 2006 and is now used as a public theatre.
The 1964 weightlifting program was the same as it had been in 1956 and 1960, with seven classes, all with the same weight divisions. The Soviet Union was the leading nation, winning four of the seven classes, and 7 of the 21 medals. Poland, Japan, and Czechoslovakia won the other classes, with Poland winning four medals, and Japan and Hungary winning three each.
