Medal Events 1

The 1968 Olympic hockey tournament took place at the Municipal Hockey Stadium in Magdalena Mixhuca Sports City. Sixteen (16) teams competed. The semi-finalists from the 1964 Olympics were automatically eligible, which were India, Pakistan, Australia, and the German Federal Republic (West), as was Mexico as the host nation. The other 11 teams were named by the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH) based on their rankings as of February 1968, and were as follows – Argentina, Belgium, France, German Democratic Republic (East), Great Britain, Netherlands, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Spain. Canada, Singapore, and Trinidad & Tobago were the reserves named. The format consisted of two eight-team groups that played a round-robin series of matches to determine the top two teams in each group, which advanced to the semi-finals.

Pakistan made the final for the fourth straight Olympics, and won the gold medal, as they had in 1960, this time by defeating Australia, 2-1. India, which had lost in the semi-finals to Australia, won the bronze medal match over West Germany.
