The 1968 weightlifting competitions took place at Teatro de los Insurgentes, the Theatre of the Insurgents. This was a theatre in Mexico City that had been built in 1953 as part of an urban renewal program. At the 1968 Olympics weightlifting was the only sport contested there. The 1968 Olympic weightlifting program was exactly the same as it had been since 1952, with seven weight classes, all with the same weight divisions, but this would change in 1972, with two new classes being added.
Eight nations won weightlifting medals in 1968, with five nations winning gold medals, but the Soviet Union led both lists with three golds, and six medals overall. Poland won five medals, while no nation other than the USSR won more than one gold.
