The 1976 Olympic cycling program saw one change from 1972. The tandem sprint had been dropped from the Olympic Program, after having been contested since 1906 – save for 1912 when there were no track events. There were four track events in Montréal – kilometre time trial, match sprint, individual pursuit, and team pursuit, all raced at the Olympic Velodrome. For the first time ever at the Olympics, this was a fully indoor velodrome, which would later become standard, but in 1976 it was novel, and the times were much faster than racing outdoors, without the influence of the weather. As in 1972, the track length was 285.714 metres, or 3½ laps to the kilometre.
German riders won three events, with East German Klaus-Jürgen Grünke winning the kilometre time trial, West German Gregor Braun taking the individual pursuit, and the West German pursuit team bringing home gold. Czechoslovakian Anton Tkáč won the match sprint.
