In its session at the 1972 München Olympics, the IOC decided to admit women’s handball for the 1976 Games. The men’s indoor game had only been introduced in the 1972 Games. The change meant a reduction of the playing field for the men. In München, there had been a 16-team field, but the addition of six women’s teams reduced that number to 12.
