The Olympic slalom canoe program was standardized in 1992, with no change in the men’s and women’s programs from 1992-2016. There were four slalom events, kayak and Canadian singles for men, men’s Canadian doubles, and women’s kayak singles. In the women’s kayak singles Štěpánka Hilgertová of the Czech Republic defended her gold medal from Atlanta. Tony Estanguet of France won the Canadian slalom singles, and he would repeat that victory in 2004 and 2012, placing ninth in 2008. The slalom gold medals were divided among four nations – Czech Republic, France, Germany, and Slovakia, as they had in 1996, with France and Slovakia both winning three medals in canoe slalom.
The venues for flatwater and whitewater were separate, as they have to be, but they were adjacent and were set at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, New South Wales, which also hosted the rowing events. Penrith is a western suburb of Sydney, approximately 50 km from the city center.
