Several changes were made to the handball program in Sydney. The women’s field was increased to 10, up from 8 in Atlanta. Both competitions now also featured a quarter-final stage, somewhat decreasing the importance of the pool stage. The competitions were held in The Dome and Exhibition Complex, which is located in the Olympic Park. The preliminary matches were held in pavillion 2, but the final stages were contested in the The Dome, seating 10,000.
