This was the first major international Nordic combined event since the 1939 World Championships. The single individual event consisted of an 18 km ski race, with the start and finish in the Skistadion. The 1948 Nordic combined used the results from the open 18 km race, rather than a separate race. This was followed one day later by ski jumping, with all jumpers having three attempts on the Große Olympia-Schanze, the best two marks to count. There was a separate jumping competition.
