The gymnastics events began the Olympics of 1906, as the team competition was started immediately after the end of the Opening Ceremony, finishing on the next day. The gymnastics events were held on the infield of the Panathenaic Stadium. There were four events: team all-around competition, individual all-around competition for five events, individual all-around competition for six events, and rope climbing. A fifth event was scheduled, Event #55 in the entry lists, side horse vault. It was not conducted as a separate event, for reasons unknown. The side horse vault was the “sixth” event added to the individual all-around for five events to make up the individual all-around for six events.
