Innsbruck had hosted the 1964 Olympic Winter Games, with the Nordic combined event held entirely in Seefeld, a small village 17 km northwest of Innsbruck, which has become an important European center for cross-country skiing. In 1976, the cross-country race would again be held in Seefeld, but the event started with normal hill jumping, held in Bergisel, on the Bergiselschanze, which has become well-known as one of the sites of the annual Four Hills Tournament. All competitors had three jumps, with the best two scores of each to count. The next day, 9 February, the 15 km cross-country race started and finished at the Langlaugzentrum in Seefeld.
