Table tennis saw a change in its program in 2008. Because of the Chinese dominance, it was elected to dispense with the doubles event, in which China had won all but one gold medal, and replace it with a team event. The team event consisted of 16 teams separated into four pools of four teams. Each match consisted of two singles matches and a doubles match, played by teams of three players each. The two best teams in each pool advanced to a single-elimination tournament. Despite this the Chinese dominated table tennis in Beijing, as expected. They swept the medals in both singles contests, and won both team events.
