BMX appeared at its third Olympic Games in 2016, having débuted at Beijing in 2008. Rio de Janeiro built a state-of-the-art BMX complex for the 2016 Olympics. There were two events contested in BMX racing, one for men and one for women. Colombia’s Mariana Pajón won the women’s title, defending the gold medal she had won in London. Latvia’s Māris Štrombergs had won the men’s event in 2008 and 2012, but he went out in the quarter-finals in Rio as the men’s gold medal went to American Connor Fields.
