Both the men’s and the women’s field handball tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park. As in the previous Olympic Games, there were two groups with six teams each. Then the best eight teams determined the medal winners in knock-out matches. The semi-finals were an European affair. Denmark won the men’s tournament, the first Olympic medal for Danish men ever. The Russian women won the first gold medal for their country since 1980 when the Soviet Union succeeded.
