While BMX racing had been a part of the Olympic program since 2008, BMX freestyle was a new addition for 2020. Of the different styles, park was chosen for the Games, which scores points for tricks done within the confines of a skate park, as opposed to, for example, trails or flatland. Points are on a scale from 0 to 99.99, based on the difficulty of the trick and the execution. Both the BMX racing and freestyle events were held at the Ariake Urban Sports Park, a venue built specifically for the Tokyo Games.
The freestyle races were divided into two parts, beginning with a seeding round that determined the starting order for the final. Each rider was given two runs of sixty seconds to perform their tricks, with the average of the two runs being their final score. This ranking allows the highest scorers to begin last in the final, giving them the advantage of knowing what scores they need to beat and allowing them to select their tricks accordingly. In the final, only the best of the two runs counted.
Only Great Britain took home medals from both events, with Charlotte Worthington winning the women’s event and Declan Brooks capturing bronze in the men’s. The champion in the men’s competition was Logan Martin of Australia, while Venezuela’s Daniel Dhers was runner-up. In the women’s tournament, Hannah Roberts of the United States placed second, while Switzerland’s Nikita Ducarroz was third.
