Equestrian dressage was contested at the marvelous venue of the Château de Versailles, with the standard programme of an individual and a team competition. The team event was changed slightly, as only three riders composed a team, while in Tokyo, and most previous Olympics, the teams had four riders.
Germany again dominated equestrian dressage, winning both gold medals, with Jessica von Bredow-Werndl winning the individual gold, and with the redoubtable Isabell Werth taking silver for her 14th Olympic equestrian medal, extending her own record for the sport. It was also the fifth consecutive Olympics at which Werth won the individual silver, after taking gold in 1996.
Germany’s victory in the team event was their third consecutive gold medal in the event and their eighth of the last nine Olympics; however, if including West Germany, it would be their 10th of the last 11 Olympics, going back to 1984.
