Jessica von Bredow-Werndl took a year off competition in 2022 to give birth to her daughter, Ella Marie, but the combination of Jessica and her mare, TSF Dalera, returned the following year to retain her European Championship title. The scandal concerning British rider Charlotte Dujardin that forced her to withdrew on the eve of the Paris Games meant that Bredow-Werndl’s closest challengers would be her teammate Isabell Werth, and Britain’s Lottie Fry, who had unexpectedly won the 2022 World Championship in Bredow-Werndl’s absence.

Werth was the first of the contenders to perform in the final phase and she produced an excellent display that scored especially highly on its artistic merits and took the lead with a score of 89.614. Fry scored 88.971, and then came von Bredow-Werndl. The German showed a marked improvement over her performance in the team competition and, with a late run of maximum 10s, edged ahead of Werth by half a percentage point to move into the gold medal position.

This was Bredow-Werndl’s fourth successive Olympic gold medal, which equaled the record of Nicole Uphoff-Becker and Rembrandt for most titles by a horse and rider combination. Werth further extended her record tally of Olympic equestrian medals to 14.
