Volleyball at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Medal Events 2

The volleyball tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics was held at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, an exhibition center built during the interwar period. The format remained mostly the same as it had since 1996, when the number of women’s teams rose to 12 to achieve parity with the men. The most significant change was the addition of a 13th athlete to the squads, who would play on in the case of a medical emergency among the regular players.

Outside of the hosts, qualification was based on two schemes. The first was a series of three tournaments, wherein the top two teams from each would earn automatic qualification for Paris. The remaining five places went to the top-ranked teams that had not yet qualified, based on the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball’s world ranking system, and ensuring that every continent had at least one nation in the tournament.

The reigning men’s Olympic champion was France, a team that managed to defend its title on home soil by defeating Poland three sets to zero in the final. The United States overcome Italy by the same margin to secure bronze. This was the first successful defense of a men’s Olympic volleyball title since the Americans had done so in 1984 and 1988. On the women’s side, the reigning American champions were bested by the Italians who, in winning the tournament, had their first women’s Olympic podium finish and their first Olympic title for either sex. Bronze went to the Brazilians, who defeated Türkiye three sets to one for the final podium spot.
