Polo has been on the Olympic Programme in 1900, 1908, 1920, 1924, and 1936. The 1920 Olympic polo tournament took place at the Wellingtonrenbaan, in Ostende, on the Belgian coast, quite some distance from Antwerp. The Wellington Hippodrome is a horse racing facility built in 1883 and renovated in 2011. As of 2024, it still contests horse racing and is also a concert/events venue. In 2005, four holes of a nine-hole golf course were built on the infield of the hippodrome.
Four nations competed in 1920, with Great Britain winning the gold medal with victories over Belgium, and then defeating Spain, 13-11, in the final.
