Ski mountaineering is a ski discipline combining elements of cross-country skiing, usually uphill, and then descending the mountain to the finish. It made its Olympic début at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games. The sport is governed internationally by the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF). International competitions were first held in the early 1990s, then governed by the Comité International du Ski-Alpinisme de Compétition (CISAC), founded by the skiing associations of France, Italy, Slovakia, Andorra, and Switzerland. The CISAC merged with the International Council for Ski Mountaineering Competitions (ISMC) in 1999 and became the International Ski Mountaineering Federation in 2008.
The ISMC began holding a World Cup circuit in the 2004 season and World Championships began in 2002, at first hosted by the ISMC, and they are held biennially. Six different events have been contested at the World Championships, for both men and women: individual, team, relay, combination, vertical, and long-distance.
Ski mountaineering débuted at the 2020 Youth Olympic Winter Games, after which the IOC announced at the IOC Session on 20 July 2021 that ski mountaineering could be an optional sport at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina. In October 2021, the Organizing Committee of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games announced that ski mountaineering would be added to the Olympic Programme and held at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio.
Three events were chosen for the Olympic début of ski mountaineering with a sprint race for men and women and a mixed relay. The sprint events started at an altitude of 1,200 metres and ascended 65 metres over a track length of 725 metres before descending. The mixed relay started at 1,210 metres, ascending and descending 137 metres over a track length of 1,410 metres. Each relay team consisted of one man and one woman, both skiing two legs of the course.
The three events were won by three different nations with France, Spain, and Switzerland taking gold medals. France and Spain won six of the nine available medals, three each, while Switzerland took two, the remaining medal won by a neutral individual athlete.
