Description

The first international body overseeing the sport of triathlon was the Triathlon Federation International (TFI), founded in November 1987. However, the TFI faced internal conflicts, particularly between European and North American factions, over governance structures and event control.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) was founded on 1 April 1989, at the first ITU Congress in Avignon, France, in the presence of a total of 30 National Federations. The first World Championships in the sport would be held at the French prefecture later that year, in August. The federation was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 3 September 1994, at the IOC Session in Paris.

The sport made its Olympic début at Sydney 2000, with men and women individual events. Ten years later, triathlon was also included in the programme of the Youth Summer Olympics, at its inaugural Singapore 2010 edition. In October 2020, the federation would change its name to World Triathlon (WT) in order to better serve the development of the sport in all its forms.

Para triathlon is also overseen by WT. At Rio 2016, the discipline made its Paralympic début with six medal events. As a multi-sport federation, World Triathlon also governs the non-Olympic disciplines of aquathlon, duathlon, cross duathlon, cross triathlon, long distance triathlon, and Winter triathlon. The discipline of duathlon first appeared at the World Games in 2013 as an invitational sport, and its presence on the official programme of the competition has been continuous since 2022, always with individual events for men and women, and a mixed relay. Before débuting at the Olympics, triathlon was contested twice at the World Games, first as an invitational sport in 1989, followed by official individual and team events for both genders in 1993.

The federation’s headquarters moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the IOC, in 2014. As of January 2026, World Triathlon has 168 national member federations, and its current president is Spain’s Antonio Arimany.

Despite not being an international federation, the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) has also been partly responsible for the success of triathlon worldwide, as the organizer of the famous Ironman Triathlon Series.
