On 20 May 1983, 21 International Federations governing sports on the program of the Olympic Games met in Lausanne and established the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF). The ASOIF constitution defines its purpose as “to coordinate and defend the common interests of its members to ensure close cooperation between them, the members of the Olympic Movement and those of other organizations, with the aim of preserving the unity of the Olympic Movement while maintaining the authority, independence and autonomy of the member International Federations.” The ASOIF is currently based in Lausanne, Switzerland and has now 28 members.
