FormatSingle-elimination tournament. Losing semi-finalists wrestled off for 3rd-Place.

The finals matched Kaarle “Kalle” Anttila of Finland and Gottfrid Svensson of Sweden in what was a match of new and old in this class. Svensson was a veteran, having competed in the Greco-Roman lightweight class at the 1912 Olympics, the 1911 World Championships, and having been runner-up in 1913 in the European Championships. Antilla had never before competed internationally. He won the gold medal in Antwerp, however, presaging a great career. He would win a second Olympic title in 1924 (winning the Greco-Roman featherweight class), after having won the 1921 and 1922 World Championship.
