Soviet Kazakh Valery Rezantsev was the dominant wrestler in this class in the early 1970s. He came to München having won the 1970-71 Worlds, the first of his five consecutive titles. He had also won the 1970 European Championship, a title he would capture again in 1973-74. In München he was held to a draw in his first match against Romaniana Nicolae Neguţ, but then won his next six matches to win the gold medal. He would return in 1976 and defend his gold medal in Montréal. The silver medal went to Yugoslav Josip Čorak, who had been the 1969 European Champion. Bronze went to Poland’s Czesław Kwieciński, who had a silver medal from the 1970 Worlds and a bronze at the 1965 Worlds. He would return in 1976 and repeat as bronze medalist.
