Only seven teams competed with four finishing the three phases. The Soviet Union won the gold medal comfortably over Italy, which does have an equestrian history. Mexico was third with Hungary, the only other nation to finish, in fourth. At the Fontainebleau Eventing Festival in Paris, France won the title with West Germany second and Australia third.
