In the men’s singles, the question was only which Doherty brother – Reggie or Laurie – would win. In fact, after winning their first round matches, they were to play each other in the semi-finals, but refused to do so, stating that they only did that in major championships, i.e., Wimbledon. Reggie withdrew in favor of his brother, and Laurie advanced to the final, where, under a bright sun, he easily defeated Harold Mahony (1896 Wimbledon singles champion and the 1899 European champion), three sets to love. Sydney Smith, the runner-up to Reggie Doherty at Wimbledon, missed the Games to instead defend his Welsh Championships title.
