In the cesta punta event of pelota basque, the ball is played with a curved basket (cistera). Outside of Europe, this variant is usually referred to as jai-alai. The Mexican duo of Juan Hamui and Adrián Zubikarai had won the world title back in 1966, and the home crowd hoped the Mexican quartet would be able to repeat that victory. The losing finalists in 1966 had been the Spanish-Basque Mirapeix brothers, who were also competing in Mexico. They turned out to be unbeatable, while the Mexicans was also overcome by the French in the final round.
