Eight fighters competed in a single-elimination tournament. The 1991 World Champion, Tonny Sørensen of Denmark, did not compete in Barcelona, which left the favorite’s role to Egyptian Amru Khairy, the 1989 World Champion. Khairy lost in the semi-finals to Korean Kim Je-Kyung, who then won this class by defeating Nigerian Emmanuel Peter Oghenejobo in the final.
